Our moto is: ‘Glan Afan Silver Surfers – Increasing Skills and Creativity in the Community’

History of Glan Afan Silver Surfers

Glan Afan Silver Surfers has been running since February 2007. The idea for a Silver Surfers group came along when a pupil at the school won an award, and was presented money for an ‘Intergenerational Project.’ The group started with a very small number of ‘Silver Surfers’, but has since grown and we now have a lot more older people for the community coming into the school each week to learn how to use a computer.

We have been recognised nationally for our Voluntary work.
Joseph (one of our tutors) won the ‘BT Internet Ranger of the Year Award’ in 2007 for the work he has done with the group.

Shortly after Joseph received his award, the group were invited to London to have a special tour of Parliament. They travelled by first class train, and had a guided tour of the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

ITV Wales News and BBC Wales News have also recognised us and featured a special news item on our group on their evening news bulletin.

In 2009, Luke and Joseph were recognised by the High Sheriff Award scheme for their outstanding voluntary work, and were presented a certificate in the Dylan Thomas centre in Swansea.

Also in 2009, the Glan Afan Silver Surfers group was highly commended by the ‘Wales Volunteer of the Year Award’ and was presented a certificate in a ceremony at Neath Port Talbot Council For Voluntary Service.

In October 2009, we were awarded a grant of £1,468 from Awards for All. Click here for more info.

In 2010, one of Glan Afan Silver Surfers’ tutors, Luke, was awarded a Local Hero Award with The Wave and Swansea Sound for all his work in the community. Click here for more info.

In the second half of 2010, Owen Thomas, a tutor at Glan Afan Silver Surfers won the ‘BT Internet Ranger of the Year Award Wales’. Click here for more info.

The Silver Surfers team are always busy throughout the year, coming up with new things and improving on their work. We are very proud of the awards we have received, and hope to continue with to improve Silver Surfers.
